Crescent Ski Council January President's Update

January 03, 2022 9:28 PM | Anonymous member (Administrator)
January 2022

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope you had a very Merry Christmas and are continuing to enjoy the Holiday season. Here’s looking forward to a better year!

However, we’re beginning the New Year with another COVID-19 spike, thanks to the omicron variant. As ski resorts opened this season, many already had implemented requirements to help deter the spread of COVID-19, including wearing face coverings and showing proof of vaccination for indoor dining. According to statistics compiled by the National Ski Areas Association, ski areas in the United States recorded 59 million ski visits during the 2020-21 season. I was surprised to learn that this was the fifth busiest season on record since the organizations started tracking visitation in 1978. Even with these stats, the ski industry reported a loss of an estimated $2 billion in 2020 due to the pandemic. This season, many ski areas are taking additional measures because of the uptick in the omicron variant. Areas may require masks to ride the gondola or to go indoors, whether entering a lodge or to eat. Some resorts also require proof of vaccination for indoor dining. These additional and evolving requirements can vary by resort, so be sure you review the protocols of the resort you are visiting as well as for any public transportation. Resorts are requiring more restrictions of their employees, as they don’t want to have to close due to employee illness as the airlines have had to cancel flights.

Crescent is moving forward with our plans for the Sun Valley Ski Week and the Spring Convention. We’re hopeful this variant will be behind us, plus we can take measures similar to those we took at Steamboat, which worked well.

I would love to hear your suggestions and/or recommendations. Feel free to contact me with your interests or to learn more about your Council. Keep the ideas coming to keep Crescent the BEST Council in the country!

PAST PRESIDENT (Pat Harvey)

Election of officers for the 2022/23 year will be held at the Spring Convention in April 2022. We are looking forward to getting together at the beach in April and having a live election. We are always looking for interested Crescent members to join our team of officers. We will be voting for President, VP, Treasurer and Secretary. As you know, most of the officers have been in various positions with Crescent for a very long time. Please help give us a break if you can and contact me if you’re interested in learning more about the officer positions. Thanks.

CRESCENT TRIPS (Lisa Beregi)

Happy New Year! I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays and is looking forward to 2022. Fingers crossed we're almost two years into this COVID mess and about to break through the other side!

STEAMBOAT RACE AND LEARN TO SKI/RIDE CAMP

Even with less than perfect snow conditions, the annual trip was a huge success! 204 CSC members stuck with the program and had a really good week. It was great to be around old friends from other clubs and meet new folks. The new lodging property was lovely!! Not only great accommodations, but the best shuttle service. If you missed this year, start planning for next - same time, same place, #39!

SUN VALLEY SKI WEEK

By the time you read this, we will be two weeks from traveling to Sun Valley! We have 107 participants heading to one of the most amazing resorts! You never know what last minute cancelations may occur, so if you still want to jump on this one, call Sara at Sports America to see if there is any availability.

2023 SKI WEEK

The counts are in and the 2023 Crescent Ski Week will be to Jackson Hole!! Another great destination and we haven't been there since 2007.

CONVENTIONS (Cathie Mulgrew)

We have begun taking club registration/deposits for CSC Spring Convention to be held 4/21/22-4/24/22 at Kingston Plantation in Myrtle Beach. The theme will be The Roaring 20's. All of the information, including registration forms can be found on the CSC website: https://www.crescentskicouncil.org/conventions.html. We plan to have all of the usual activities including the vendor show, Beach Olympics, DJ party with a Roaring 20's theme and a great time with all of your Crescent friends. The Early Bird Reception on 4/21/22 will be $15 per person. Let's keep putting that positive energy out into the universe so we may successfully hold this Convention in person!

CSC Fall Convention will be held 10/28/22-10/30/22 at Glenstone Lodge in Gatlinburg, TN. Make sure you save the date!

Thank you to Cameron Andrews and Mary Anne Koltowich for their work in organizing these CSC events! Happy 2022 (it's going to be a great year!).

*CSC Announces Dates and Location for the 2022 Fall Conference*

SAVE THE DATES

Friday, October 28 – Sunday, October 30, 2022 are our conference dates. While this is Halloween weekend, these are absolutely the best rates we can get when compared to other weekends. We are pleased to announce preliminary plans for our 2022 CSC Fall Conference. Once again, we will be at the Glenstone in Gatlinburg, TN. The standard room rate is $109 + taxes. This is only a $10 increase from past years and represents a huge discount from normal Glenstone rates. There may be a few other type rooms available – Front Balcony, Junior Suite, and Executive Suite (sleeps 4 with two beds and two baths) depending on availability at reduced rates also. Be looking for details later on registration and schedule information. So hope we can get together and COVID is mostly behind us.

RACING (Rich Mead)

December racing got off to a very slow start due to abnormally warm temperatures and minimal snow cover. At the annual Steamboat race camp, Dec 4-11, lack of cover and depth of snow prevented the use of full race gates and all training was done using brush gates. The final race event was moved from Friday to Thursday night so as not to interfere with public access to the limited slope availability. Despite these challenges the instructors and staff at Steamboat worked exceptionally hard to provide a quality training event for all of the participants.

Meanwhile, back in North Carolina, Appalachian cancelled the Crescent Development Race, Dec 12, due to warm temperatures and thin snow cover, as well as our first regular season race weekend, Dec 18- 19. However, Sugar Mountain successfully held their annual race camp, Dec 10-12, with a number of Crescent racers participating. The return of cold temperatures for snowmaking after the first of the year will hopefully kick off the race season with our first race at Sugar, Jan 8-9. Wishing all skiers/boarders great snow during the coming months!

SOCIAL MEDIA (Pat Harvey)

Winter has finally arrived in parts of the country. Our posts have turned to snow reports and we’re loving it! We’ll be following all the ski areas and post all the updates so as you all get ready for the 2022 ski trips, you’ll be ready to go. Make sure to follow us on the social media pages: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Any questions, ideas or suggestions regarding Social Media, please contact me. Keep spreading the word on Crescent’s Social Media pages to your Club members and friends. And of course we are always looking for volunteers to help us with all the posts and pictures of the Council’s and Clubs’ trips. A big thanks to our favorite photographer, Chuck Young, for all the great pictures he took and posted from the Steamboat trip earlier this month. And thanks to Charles Crawford from Augusta for agreeing to add on as a member of the Social Media Committee to post pictures from the races on the CSC Racing page. Clubs, make sure to send me your pictures and tag Crescent (@crescentski) on your posts to your pages. We are looking forward to a great season and sharing all the news, updates and snow reports.
