Crescent Ski Council - January President's Letter

January 04, 2023 9:23 AM | Anonymous

Mary Anne Koltowich

First, our family so much enjoyed the Crescent Steamboat Springs trip. on the ground, we found fresh snow several days for great skiing every up to Thunder head lodge for our Tuesday night BBQ Western dinner and dance good snow already The gondola ride gave us amazing views of the town and landscapes below. The week was capped off with a prime rib/salmon dinner for our Crescent group at the Steamboat Grand. We were all honored to have Billy Kidd talk to us about skiing and Steamboat. Billy became one of the first men to medal alpine skiing in the 1962or of Skiing. Winter Olympics in 1964. He was a member of the U.S. Ski Team from in 1970, later winning the gold medal in the combined at the 1970 World Championships. Billy moved to Steamboat Springs in 1970 and still serves as the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. Direct Racing awards were handed out, along with many door prizes.

Lots of Crescent thanks go to Cathy Mulgrew, Steamboat Trip Coordinator; Lisa Beregi, Crescent Trips Director; and Sara Clemons, President, Sports America Tours , and Larry Young, Steamboat Resorts . There were others be hind the scenes helping with our activities and events, so thanks also to Frances Edwards, Rich Mead, Paul Dobson, and Ron Scott. bumps, bruises, and sprains hope all of you are recovering.

It was a truly wonderful and memorable week enjoying the winter magic of Steamboat!

Special note: We are looking to fill some CSC Positions: (CSC Secretary, CSC Treasurer, and CSC Vice President). Frances Edwards (ETMM) has been approved by our Board to fulfill this position until a permanent individual can be found. Much thanks to Frances! Also Ellen Cortright, after long consideration, has decided to step down as our Treasurer upon the end of the current term next June. So we need to find nominees for this position for elections in April 2023. We really need your help, so please consider serving and making some new friends.

Another special note: Michelle will not be seeking re-election as VP in the Spring of 2023. She cited that she gave some hard thought into whether she want to eventually seek election as President and has decided that is not her goal at this time. She does not want to occupy the position as she feels it is a training position for the eventual running for the Presidency. I know there are a number of you out there that would really make a good VP for Crescent, so please let me know if you are interested.

National Ski Club Federation News: Check out the end of this newsletter for recent NSCF news. Thought it might be easier to include it here instead of sending out multiple emails this month.

VICE PRESIDENT (Michelle Shuford)

It was great seeing everybody at Fall Conference! I have continued to assist with the transition of Conventions to Jodie Stephens. But other than that, not much else is going on, so this position is fairly easy. So I would like to encourage anyone that is interested in Crescent to run for Vice President in the Spring. I'm looking forward to seeing many of you on the Jackson Hole trip. Until then think snowy thoughts!

TREASURER (Ellen Cortright)

I have decided to close my tenure term as Treasurer of Crescent Ski Council upon the end of the current term. It is not a decision I made easily. Please begin a search for a new Treasurer for the election in April. I will complete any and all Treasurer duties until June 1, but I will be available during the transition as much as I can.

It is time for me to pursue alternate volunteer options, and to begin embracing retirement and start opening the doors to our list of opportunities. We will continue to be involved with the organization.

One of the most difficult requirements of the Treasurer position is to locate a volunteer to review the books at the end of each fiscal year. I am happy to fill that role, if needed, once the final year for which I was responsible has been reviewed.

CONVENTIONS (Jodi Stevens)

2023 CSC Spring Convention: Dates are April 27-30, 2023. All lodging is at Brighton Towers at Kingston Plantation in Myrtle Beach. Each club needs to have ONE Rooming coordinator with whom your members communicate. Make sure to get your Club’s form in ASAP. Registration forms should be sent to me, Jodi Stephens, 18 St. James Square, Huntsville, AL 35801. The Club Registration Form, Rooming list, and Lodging Information Form are posted on Crescent’s website. Please send questions to me also ( with the subject line CSC Spring Convention (so I can recognize the importance).

The theme is WOODSTOCK so pull out those old bell bottoms, tie-dyed shirts, and put flowers in your hair! We will be re-establishing the Table Decorating Competition also. More information next month.

SAVE THE DATE!: 2023 CSC Fall Leadership & Training Conference, October 27-29, 2023 Location: Glenstone Lodge, Gatlinburg, TN

TRIPS (Lisa Beregi)

I hope this finds you all enjoying the holidays with family and friends. As the bitter cold temps from the last week slowly turn to warm and rain (appropriate way to finish off 2022). I know you are all also looking forward to upcoming ski trips and continuing the comradery with old friends and making new ones!

STEAMBOAT RACE AND LEARN TO SKI CAMP: For the 147 folks that took early season chances on Steamboat - there was no disappointment! Great conditions, great lessons and a fun filled week was had by all. Many thanks to all the staff at Steamboat Resort, especially Larry Young, Sara Clemons, Cathie Mulgrew and Ron Scott for all they did to see to our good time!

JACKSON HOLE JANUARY SKI WEEK: As 146 folks are only weeks away from this year’s CSC Ski Week to Jackson Hole, all components of the trip are coming together! Final payments and flight information was all due to by December 10th Transfers are currently being worked on, lodging pairings are firmed up - we have one female spot open, and activities are being finalized.

2024 ADVENTURE TRIP - ICELAND: I have been in contact with Collette and we are working on the contract so that the trip can be rolled out at Spring Convention. Dates will be May 26th - June 4, 2024, and pricing will be around $5,000 including the cancel for any reason up to the day before for cash back insurance. Put the date on your calendar and start your adventure trip fund!

RACING (Rich Mead)

Race season started off with the 39th annual Crescent Race and Learn to Ski trip to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The trip was originally conceived as an early season training camp for Crescent racers and has grown to include skiers and snowboarders of all ages and abilities. For the racers who attended this year, they were rewarded not only with excellent gate training but the best snow conditions and more open terrain experienced in over 10 years. Meanwhile, back in the Southeast, warmer temperatures forced the cancellation of the first regular season race at Appalachian and Sugar Mountain's annual 3-day race clinic was postponed one week. Weather and snow conditions permitting, in January, the Crescent club racers will be racing at Sugar Mountain, January 7-8 and at Appalachian January 28-29. Clubs with race programs are always looking for new racers to join the family friendly program. And race weekends are not just for racers. Crescent club members are welcome to join racers at the host area and can receive the lift ticket discounts offered to the racers. If interested, please contact your club's race director. The new Crescent website includes a page with the names of Race Directors and their email addresses.

In addition to the ski areas that host the race events, the race program is supported by a number of sponsors who generously provide discounts and/or products that are used as competition and/or door prizes awarded to the racers. All Crescent members are encouraged to support the Race Program sponsors. A list of current sponsors is located on the Crescent website.

Website Database Updates: Club Reps and Presidents are reminded to send changes to contact info to Ken Lumsden

It is not necessary to send your entire list. Only send Additions, Deletions, Corrections.

Social Media: We can’t keep up with all the snow reports this season on social media. Conditions all over have been amazing, and it’s only the beginning of January! Still would like more pictures from those who went on Crescent’s December trip. And for those going to Jackson Hoke with Crescent this month, send me pix, tag @crescentski on your posts and photos. And we’ll be watching for the Club trips and share all we can!

Reminder we now have a Facebook group set up for our members to post skis, ski boots, ski jackets, gloves, helmets, or any slightly used gear for sale. You asked and we created this group so now it’s your turn to post on our Crescent Ski Council Ski Marketplace on Facebook. Post your ski gear and equipment you’d like to sell. Crescent wants to be the middleman to help you sell and buy anything ski-related. Spread the word to your club members. Any questions or suggestions, let me know. Let’s make this an added benefit for our members.

Additionally, reminder we need someone to take over the Crescent Ski Council Racing page. Contact Pat Harvey at if you’re interested in helping with the racing page.

It’s not too early to think about getting involved and running for an office with Crescent. Due to work and personal commitments, Lynn Wise (Charlotte) had to submit her resignation as CSC Secretary after the Fall Conference. Thanks to Frances Edwards (ETMM) for agreeing to be interim Secretary. We are looking for someone to take over that spot and run for Secretary for the 2023/24 season. Also, Michelle Shuford (Palmetto) will serve as VP for the rest of this year but won’t be continuing after her term is over in June. We are looking for someone interested in the VP position for 2023/24. Ellen Cortright has advised this will be her last year as Treasurer. So financial gurus, consider taking over the position of Treasurer for 2023/24. Contact me if interested.

Happy New Year everyone! Keep spreading the word on our social media pages and our Marketplace group.

Pat Harvey
Past President/Social Media Chair

December 27, 2022, from Lisa Beregi, Education Chair:

Toko waxes and tools is a Black Diamond sponsor of the National Ski Council Federation. Instead of trying to do several Zoom calls, especially during the start of the season and the holidays, they would like to provide a monthly blasts for each Council to share with their clubs and the clubs to share with their members.

Over the next 4 months, we will be sending you a blast from Toko to share. Each blast will contain 2-3, short videos on Toko products (vises, irons) or "How-To" use their products (edge tuners, waxing, brushing, etc).

Toko is a Swiss brand and are known for their quality. They are supporting some of our events and in addition have extended a 30% discount to all NCSF members. To access this discount, one needs to go to, put desired items in the shopping cart, and then enter and apply the discount code NSCFTOKO on checkout (it’s on the right under promotional codes). The discount is on all products except for clearance items which are already very marked down.

December is month two, and we are featuring How to use Edge Tuner, side edge beveling and shaping sidewalls.
