    Hi Club Members,

I hope you had an enjoyable Labor Day weekend! I spent my weekend in NYC at the US Open with the family. August was a good month for the Club. We had new member signups, several Thirsty Thursday Socials, an exciting Whitewater Trip weekend to Ace Resorts in WV, and a fun Lake Party on Lake Norman. The Lake Party has become an annual event and we very much appreciate Randy and Dawn’s hospitality.

I would like to announce Aubrie Beranek as our new Club Social Chair and Alisa Weber as our new Club Events Chair! I’m excited to have these two ladies step up to lead these committees. Aubrie is working on some social activities and Alisa is working with Pam Kain to plan a Kayak Float on the French Broad River. I’m anticipating good things from their contributions.

Our September Club Meeting is scheduled for Thursday September 8th, 6:30 pm, at Dilworth Neighborhood Grill. We've also added a Thirsty Thursday Happy Hour starting at 5 pm for anyone who can arrive before the meeting. This meeting is the kickoff to our new season, so don't miss it!

Our Western Trips are selling fast and we have some great new events in store for you this month! Visit our trips page for more details!

I hope to see you at one of the September events!

    Hi Club Members,

August came in hot and everyone has been super busy! We have some exciting events coming soon, so be sure to read through all our announcements on our events and trips pages.

I kicked off the Thirsty Thursday Happy Hour last week at Duckworth's - Rae Farms. Thanks to the great crowd who attended. If you missed it, don't worry. You have 2 more chances to attend on Thursdays, August 18th & 25th.

Our Western Trips are selling very well with Steamboat & Banff already sold out and on a waitlist. If you haven't already secured your place, hurry.

The Social Committee Chair position is open! Please contact me at 704-906-1110 or president@cltsnow.com if you are interested in volunteering. This position works primarily with me organizing Club Events and Activities. Board and Committee Chairs enjoy a 10% discount on our Western Trips!

I hope to see you at one of our August Events and at the September Club Meeting.

    Tom Grayson

    Club President

At the May monthly club meeting, members took a break from free appetizers and great craft beer, to brainstorm on their top trips for our planned 2022-23 trips. Here’s the scoop: the good, the bad, and the ugly — straight from members’ minds (with only minimal editing or elaboration from your editor : ))

Winter Park (Club trip Jan 28-Feb 4, 2023)

    • It’s 3000-acres large!—From the Winter Park Ski Resort website: Winter Park Resort is Colorado's longest continually operated ski resort, featuring Seven Territories across 3,081 acres of award-winning terrain.
    • Family-friendly, with an intermediate-level bowl—From Uncover Colorado: The Parsenn Bowl is located above the tree line and at the highest lift-served point on the mountain,12,060 ft. It's one of the few big bowls in Colorado that intermediates can enjoy. The surrounding views of the Rocky Mountains are breathtaking.
    • Closest destination resort to Denver— Around 2 hours drive from Denver International Airport (@85 miles). Originally built by the city of Denver as a "winter park" for its residents, Winter Park Resort opened in 1940.
    • And more: all busing free, no nightlife, “No pain, no Jane” (referring to the ungroomed “Mary Jane” territory (my personal favorite!), “5.5 mile run - lunch/beer,” Zephyr Mountain Lodge at the gondola

Steamboat Ski Resort (Two trips this year: club trip Feb 4-11, 2023, and Crescent Ski Council Race and Ski Camp December 3-10, 2022)

    • “Hot springs in forest” and “Hot Springs up a dirt road” — The editor believes this would be the Strawberry Park Hot Springs, which are simply awesome. However, one year, our rental car did not make it all the way, so we suggest either taking a shuttle, if available, or ensuring your vehicle can handle the climb and the snow.
    • Cowboy town on a budget | Cool denim jackets | Gotta look fly! | Bring your cowboy boots! | Not crowded downtown | Random cattle drive on the highway
    • The backside of the mountain is almost a bird sanctuary—But the resort requests that you do NOT feed the Canada jay birds as this can be detrimental for the birds.
    • Good restaurants | German restaurant
    • Steamboat resort is huge, with great terrain variety | good intermediate and expert options, including tree skiing
    • Hard to get there, with a long ride (3+ hours) from the Denver International Airport. If you fly in to Yampa Valley (HDN) Airport (Hayden, CO), make sure you arrange a shuttle ahead of time for the 27-mile drive to the resort.

Palisades Tahoe (Club trip Feb 25-Mar 4, 2023)

    • Palisades Tahoe, previously known as Squaw Valley
    • Beautiful lake views
    • Gambling nearby
    • Art galleries
    • Good drop-offs for the daring —  Ski.com says: Palisades Tahoe’s horseshoe ridgeline is littered with terrain nuggets—like cliffs, chutes, couloirs and steep bowls—sure to get even the most seasoned skier’s heart pounding.
    • Olympic Valley two bedroom condos, with easy access to lifts and restaurants (I think this would be the Village at Palisades Tahoe)
    • One lift ticket goes to both Palisades and Alpine
    • Breakfast and dinner cruises on Lake Tahoe

Banff (Club trip Mar 11-18, 2023)

    • Most beautiful mountains, with 360° views
    • Views of Lake Louise
    • Mt. Norquay Ski Resort (the “locals’ gem”, with night skiing), Lake Louise Ski Resort, Banff Sunshine  / Sunshine Village
    • Cross the Continental Divide on the Great Divide Express Lift!
    • Delirium Dive — Crazy! — From SkiBig3: mandatory for users to be fully equipped with avalanche gear and a partner before they can even access this freeride zone.
    • Great restaurant, Lake Louise (Editors note: Google it! great restaurants with views of Lake Louise)
    • Runs groomed and wide
    • Take a bus ride to the national park

The club race team placed 2nd in the Crescent Ski Council Race Series (Eastern Division) for the 2021-2022 race season.  The rainy weather at the last event did not impact the race completions.  Congratulations to Brent Barclay, "Fastest man on the Hill", placing first in Flight 1 in the Giant Slalom, in his first race with the team.
