The opening ceremony for the 2022 Olympic Games takes place Friday, February 4 with 3,000 performers in what Beijing organizers are promising to be a cauldron lighting that is “unprecedented in the over 100-year history of the Olympic Games”. But note that some events, such as curling and luge start on Wednesday with Alpine skiing, freestyle skiing and ice hockey on Thursday. If you follow Mikaela Shiffrin, she is scheduled in the women’s slalom on February 9th. Speaking of Mikaela, a double Olympic Gold medalist and one of the best known of all the US athletes participating in the Olympics, there are a couple of articles addressing her journey to this year’s games. Read about her issues with COVID, back spasms, and mental health as she deals not only with huge expectations, but is still grieving her father who died unexpectedly in March 2020. Articles are available in the Washington Post:https://t.co/87brxVlpnn and from the AP: https://t.co/YC2LZiH4ah, https://t.co/u3QqW9m84b
With Beijing being 13 hours ahead of the Eastern Time Zone, an event that starts at 10:00 am local (Beijing) time Monday will be at 9:00 pm EDT Sunday night. Peacock will be the streaming home of the games offering live stream coverage of every event – over 2,800 hours of Olympic action! NBCOlympics.com and NBC Sports app will have streaming available and NBC, USA, and CNBC are other venues to watch the Games.
The first event for the men is scheduled to be the Downhill on Sunday, February 6th (Saturday night, US time) with the first event for the women being the Giant Slalom on Monday, February 7 (Sunday night US time). There are several new events to the 2022 Winter Olympics including Men’s and Women’s Big Air (Freestyle skiing), Mixed Team Ski Jumping, and Mixed Team Aerials.
While Crescent’s racing may not be quite like the Olympics, you too can race with us! The Crescent racing series has two weekends left as you can read about in Rich’s section. Make sure your club members know that if they don’t want to race, they still can ski on these weekends and take advantage of the discounted lift tickets.
Crescent is moving forward with our plans for the Spring Convention and Fall Conference. Even if this (or other) variants are present, we can take measures similar to those taken at Steamboat and Sun Valley, which worked well.
Please share this Update with your members by including it in your Club’s newsletters and/or placing it on your Club’s website. You can also direct your members to Crescent’s website, https://www.crescentskicouncil.org/, where the President’s Update is posted. Please add me to your e- list if your Club sends electronic newsletters and emails to your members, and also be sure to send them to Pat Harvey, Social Media Chair. Additionally, Crescent loves new volunteers - you are always welcome to join us! I would love to hear your suggestions and/or recommendations. Feel free to contact me with your interests or to learn more about your Council. Keep the ideas coming to keep Crescent the BEST Council in the country!

CRESCENT TRIPS (Lisa Beregi)
February2022?? Yes, we are already here and we have successfully hosted two council-wide ski weeks in the last 2 months!! Must be all those 2's!
STEAMBOAT RACE AND LEARN TO SKI/RIDE CAMP
As mentioned last month - with not much snow we had a great trip for 200 participants. Start planning now for the 39th Annual trip next December.
SUN VALLEY SKI WEEK
Even with a surge in COVID cases nationwide, we had 100 of 107 participants on site in Sun Valley two weeks ago! Everything went great, and many thanks to all the Trip Leaders and Club helpers that made it possible! For those of you that missed it, or have never been to Sun Valley - go!!! Yes, the greens are blues and the blues are blacks, but the 360 degree views from all over the mountain are some of the most beautiful anywhere. The history of the Sun Valley Lodge is amazing, plus being in the Village, and easy transportation into Ketchum allowed for many dining and shopping options. Not to mention a quick shuttle to Baldy or Dollar for skiing!
2023 SKI WEEK
The 2023 Crescent Ski Week will be to Jackson Hole!! Another great destination and we haven't been there since 2007, so start planning another visit to the Wild West! I have had several requests as to when people can start registering for the trip already! Let your clubs know that the roll out of the trip (and Steamboat), inclusions and pricing will be at Spring Convention/Trip Meeting. Registration for both will start sometime between May 15th and June 15th. This will also be shared at the beach.

*CSC 2022 Fall Conference*
Friday, October 28 – Sunday, October 30, 2022
While the Fall Conference dates fall on Halloween weekend, these are absolutely the best rates we can get when compared to other weekends. We are pleased to announce preliminary plans for our 2022 CSC Fall Conference. Once again, we will be at the Glenstone in Gatlinburg, TN. The standard room rate is $109 + taxes. This is only a $10 increase from past years and represents a huge discount from normal Glenstone rates. There may be a few other type rooms available – Front Balcony, Junior Suite, and Executive Suite (sleeps 4 with two beds and two baths) depending on availability at reduced rates also. Be looking for details later on registration and schedule information. So hope we can get together and COVID is mostly behind us.

RACING (Rich Mead)
Winter returned in January enabling Crescent Ski Council to hold our scheduled races. January 8-9 we raced at Sugar Mountain. An exceptionally busy Saturday forced the cancellation of NASTAR, however we were able to complete our slalom race.
January 29-30 we raced at Appalachian. Blowing snow and cold temperatures combined for sub-zero wind chill on the Saturday slalom. A half hour break between runs was called to permit everyone a chance to warm up. Sunday was a near reversal with no wind and blue skies. Snow conditions were ideal for the giant slalom race.
In February we race at Beech Mountain, Feb 12-13 and return to Sugar, Feb 26-27. It has been several years since we last raced at Beech and it’s great to have them back on the schedule.
Covid continues to affect participation. Racer registrations are less than 100 per event, similar to last year. The lower numbers require us to race only as one division. We look forward to rebuilding participation to pre pandemic levels.
To all Crescent members, not just racers. Point6 Socks is a Crescent Racing sponsor located in Steamboat, Colorado. They are offering a 25% discount on all online orders. Use discount code P6CSC25. Free shipping is also available on orders over $75. Point6 manufactures a variety of sock types for all sports, not just ski socks.
